Ethiopian Federal police officers stationed in Jimma, Southwest Ethiopia, have brutally   gunned down a mother and her son in the early hours of Thursday 13 November, 2014. They fired over 10 bullets after breaking into the house of the victims. The officers returned to their camp later that morning.
The residents of the area, who protested the killing, were met by another police action. According to eyewitnesses, the deceased Mrs Membere and her son, Yonas owned a hotel in Jimma town. On that fateful night, a group of Federal police officers reportedly refused to pay for the services after dinning in the hotel. Yonas reportedly said to them “are you not paying because you are servants of this government?” After leaving the hotel quietly, the police officers returned armed to gun down Yonas with five bullets in front of his own mother. They then shot his mother dead, who was pleading for her son not to be killed.
A resident of the town said to ESAT that although the residents of the town took to the streets protesting the brutal stabbing of a young man named Anwar in the town, they were returned back by police. Kennedy Mengesha, a government employee was also killed one month before by the Federal police in the town.
The residents say the actions of the federal Police forces are beyond what they can take.
ESAT’s effort to speak to police in Jimma was unsuccessful.
